Sorry folks, having 2 kids is harder than I thought!

My eldest is a monkey and I am constantly trying to find ways to get healthy food into him. It's a challenge, but shakes and smoothies are my go-to. My littlest is now 19 months and had been struggling with some skin issues. We rarely have dairy, but gluten was still a regular part of his diet. We love Spelt flour, and Spelt pasta....but my gut was telling me his rashes were turning up because of a food allergy. Now, it could've been a combination of things, but my readings have always told me to eliminate dairy and gluten first and go from there. Once I did that, my little man has normal skin again. It makes sense since his daddy has so many food allergies it's silly!

All the more reason to find healthy alternatives our whole family can enjoy. This is harder than it sounds. In this house we have dairy, gluten, egg, bean, garlic, and almond allergies. Needless to say, some days in the kitchen are a huge failure and it's very tiring!

Slowly I have found some go-to recipes and this one is a new family favourite. I have always liked Quinoa, but never have I used quinoa flour. In fact, I was turned off by the idea of it. But don't worry, it's not what you think! I was gifted a Quinoa recipe book from my father-in-law at Christmas, and I adapted a recipe to suit our needs! Plus, anything chocolate is worth a try, right? I hope you enjoy them as much as we did! No dairy, gluten, almond, eggs, or refined sugars. It's not fruit, but it's a healthier snack even the pickiest of kids will enjoy. Just beware, your floor will be covered in chocolate crumbs. But that's part of the fun, right?

I love chocolate, and I love bananas. I gave up sugary boxed cereal long ago, and needed a breakfast to look forward to in the morning again.

I've always been a fan of bananas with milk, and so this began.

A banana, maple syrup, cacao nibs, and some unsweetened almond milk...made this into a breakfast I wanted to eat over and over again. It's great for those that are gluten free and dairy free too!

This recipe is easy, filling, quick.. a great energy boost, and fills that void of missing cereal. The cacao nibs add a nice crunch, too.

Made from the raw cacao bean (pronounced CA-COW), "nature's pure chocolate chips" are high in fibre, magnesium, iron, antioxidants, and omega 3 fatty acids (nativasnatuals.com). Different from cocoa, they are the purest form of chocolate you can eat. Cacao nibs have a pure, but delicious chocately flavour, and can actually be mood-boosting! You can use them in baking, and even buy it in a powder for using in smoothies.

Why wouldn't you want this in the morning..or afternoon...or evening?! Grab 'em at your local health food store, Zehrs, or amazon.

If we're in a pickle, we grab the canned pure pumpkin..but we try to snag some real Pie Pumpkins, bake 'em, blend 'em, and have 'em fresh and ready for anything pumpkin.
My favourite pumpkin thing is probably the Oh She Glows Pumpkin Pie Smoothie...by the legendary Angela Liddon. Whoever knew I'd be so in love with everything vegan?
Today, I am finally bringing you some of my fave discoveries of 2013. I am amazed that so many of you have kept up with my blogging, almost 11,000 views since last December! I'm sorry for such a long absence. Between work, a 2 year old, and another lil' bun in the oven, life gets crazy sometimes. I'll do my best to keep posting my research throughout the year. Thanks for hanging out here!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! Happy New Year, and stay healthy everyone.
Keep those kidlets healthy! Dr. Joel Fuhrman, writer of "Eat to Live" provides some great scientific evidence on how to protect our children (and ourselves) from damaging immunity, and eating foods that prevent disease and illness. Even though we don't follow his guidelines to a "T", he certainly has some great information, all of which every parent should be informed. His many years as a Medical Doctor shed light on the industry, and how our diets need a drastic change for us to stay healthy. His family practise showed links between diet and allergies, ear infections, behavioural problems, with an overall poor immunity of children. Grab it from amazon, and learn how to protect your little ones from serious chronic diseases, even later in life.
(Naturalnews.com). I discovered Sovereign Silver through a friend of mine who used it to help her kids get over the chicken pox. I have used it myself to kill off pathogens and any bacteria in the system to prevent illness or parasites. I know others who swear by it, and take it overseas in the event of food poisoning! It can also be used topically, or internally to help fight off bacteria and infection.
I'm learning more about how this mineral works, but it's something I'm happy to keep in my medicine cabinet. Even better? Bottles never expire and will apparently last forever. A product worth investigating to improve health. Chat with your ND.
The amazing "cacao bean" brings us the goodness of pure cocoa butter. When melted, it spreads wonderfully, and smells phenomenal. Ever melted some delicious fresh chocolate for fondue? When I use 100% cocoa butter on my skin, I feel like the tastiest, freshest, walking chocolate bar. Mmmmm! It just smells so pure...and it is one of the most gentle, sweet, and natural moisturizers you'll find out there. It's also great for rubbing all over a preggo belly to help prevent stretch marks, and has been said to help heal various skin irritations. It's also food grade, so bake with it if you want! It's edible. I know you want to try it.
I absolutely love this company. Canadian. Chemical free. Smells amazing. Phenomenal customer service. And, overall fantastic product. 7. Meredith Deasley's "The Resourceful Mother's Secret's to Healthy Kids"

I'm down with health books...but I'm especially in awe of this one.

The best word to describe this book? Revolutionary.

This book is my go-to for Oliver. From finding healthier alternatives, eliminating toxins, and even amazing recipes, I am so grateful for Deasley's book, and for the journey she has been on with her own children. I am encouraged to know that I can cure my baby's diaper rash through natural treatments, and diet. I am thankful I understand the difference between food sensitivities and allergies. I am thankful I can help my little guy's brain development and his overall behaviour by providing the nutrients for him to grow the way he was designed to! Does your little one have strange symptoms you just can't figure out? I bet this book can help. It's a book every parent must have. Learn more about Meredith's story, and please, I beg you, grab the book, too! J. R. Watkins Lemon Cream Hand & Body Lotion

Oh. My.

This stuff is incredible. And I want to eat it. It literally smells like someone took a pie, and removed the lemon cream for you to rub all over your skin. It's Phthalate, Paraben, and yuck free. It's got goodies like shea butter, cocoa butter, and even avacado oil. Trust me, put your birthday money towards this. Or gift it to someone else and pretend it's yours. You must try it! I feel like I'm a little late on the GSE bandwagon. This stuff does amazing things; yet, I have just discovered it's amazingness! With high amounts of "disease-fighting, free radical- eliminating antioxidants and phytonutrients, it is a well-known natural immune-system stimulator and booster" (globalhealingcenter.com). It has so many different benefits, like speeding up the healing of wounds or scar tissue, anti-viral and anti-fungal, powerful antiseptic, helpful treatment for topical skin infections, environmentally friendly way to wash vegetable and fruit from toxins, preventative for yeast (candida), used to fight off parasites (food borne illness), and can even be used as a flea treatment for pets (globalhealingcenter.com)! We bought what our Naturopath recommended, the New Roots brand. Always chat to your health care provider before using it, since it's pretty potent stuff.
Finally, I have kissed my stinky pits, goodbye! It has been a battle finding something that continually works. I do like Green Beaver's brand of tea tree deodorant, but Kiss My Face has done a much better job with scent, and longevity! I am in love. With my deodorant.

Put something honest on that baby's buns!
I'm super impressed with Jessica Alba and her vision to bring us safer products for our families. Since sometimes cloth diapers don't work for everyone, there are other options. Options that are more environmentally friendly, and chemical-free..unlike most diaper brands out there.
I adore the diaper designs the Honest Company brings us! Choose designs you like, specifically for girl or boy, they're just so cute! The honest wipes are gentle, yet refreshing...AND biodegradable. Yay! You can tell this company was started by parents because they make the whole process easy by delivering products in bundles right to your door each month to make life easier.
The Honest Company makes sunscreens, soaps, laundry detergent..and so much more.
This "home away from home" in Toronto will be a tea house featuring specialty teas, a catalog of board games, simple food, and much more! I'm so excited for them to open in 2014! Bampot will be offering locally sourced and organic vegetarian foods, and their tea will be made in-house. They will offer dairy and gluten free options, too (Yipee!)

Andrea and Mark moved from Glasgow to Canada to open Bampot in the city they love. With a Scottish Chef, and an incredible photographer and musician heading up the place, how can they can go wrong? They will support local artists, and some incredible live music events.

I also wanted to mention the decor...which is incredibly bohemian and cozy. Watch the video to see!

Need to take a break from the noisy hustle and bustle of life? Say goodbye to your phone and laptop for a while, this place is interested in hosting a wireless-free environment where quality time, peace, and solitude are encouraged over staring at our electronics. This is the place you go to spend actual time with your friends, date, or family.Win!
Bampot is inviting you over to their "house" for an incredible experience, so stay tuned for their grand opening!! (male discretion advised)When I was about 7 months pregnant, I found out I was positive for Group B Streptococcus (GBS). I had a urinary tract infection (UTI) in the beginning of my pregnancy, which apparently contributes to GBS. After my test results came back positive, I came home and did what I love to do......research.

GROUP B STREPTOCOCCUS: is "carried in your intestines and lower genital tract" (mayoclinic.com).

GBS is an infection (seems very common these days) that is normally harmless in healthy adults, but in rare cases it can be fatal if passed to a baby during delivery. Maybe you're already familiar with it, since up to 40% of women have it. But if you'd like to know more, check out the article from the Mayoclinic, HERE.

As a woman who wanted a completely natural birth, I dreaded having an IV. But antibiotics were said to prevent our son, Oliver from contracting GBS. It seemed like the best thing to do.

It wasn't until later that I thought to myself..... what if GBS could have been prevented in the first place?

BUILD IMMUNITY: Birthwellness.com wrote an incredible article on reducing the colonization of GBS by building up immunity, taking acidophilis, and probiotics to bring back healthy bacteria. Leafy greens, plenty of pure drinking water, fermented foods, eliminating sugars and processed foods are all beneficial. The article also recommends the best natural treatment for GBS if tested positive, and how to avoid antibiotics. If I only I had known this sooner!

I also came across research that linked tampon use to GBS.

USE OF TAMPONS: More research told me that the use of tampons was a breeding ground of bacteria and may be a major contributor to GBS. In the 1960's when tampons became more popular, there was a huge increase in GBS in women. Based on a study posted on the National Institute of Health, those that didn't use tampons reduced their chances by 34% (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).

As a result, there ARE ways to restore a healthy intestinal and vaginal flora, and there are also ways we CAN help prevent GBS. Yet, I was freaked out (and grossed out) by the research I was finding on tampon use.

Did you know that the average woman will use about 16,800 tampons in her lifetime? (mercola.com).
Dr. Mercola discusses how the ingredients in tampons are absorbed into the blood stream, and are a "breeding ground for bacteria." Makes sense, right?

He mentions BPA, Phalates, and oil plastics are suspected chemicals in tampons. Yet, companies don't seem to want to tell us what's in them. Why?

It made me think twice about what I was putting in my body. At least I could find an alternative, and reduce the use of bleached, toxic products. It was time for a healthier option.

Ta-ta tampons!

Not only do I want to reduce my chances of GBS coming back, but choosing an environmentally friendly option. I also want to reduce my chance of Toxic Shock Syndrome (women die from this, every year).

THERE'S A HEALTHIER, CHEAPER OPTION

Ever heard of The Diva Cup?

It's a menstrual cup that is free of BPA, latex, and other chemicals. It lasts twice as long as a tampon, and it's reusable.
That means I'm constantly whipping up new things in the kitchen! Not all of them are a success, either. But it's all worth it when you win! You tweak that recipe, substitute for this and that....and BAM, you've created something healthier and delicious! One day I'll release a cookbook...

As a kid, I always loved arrowroot cookies. And it was time I made a healthier version of this favourite.

I decided to go with Spelt flour, since it is more easily digested. And arrowroot powder, you ask? The Forks Over Knives cookbook describes it as a minimally processed flour that comes from the "root" of a plant from the American tropics called an "arrowroot." Go figure.

As far as spelt flour goes, Nutritionist Kim Corrigan-Oliver mentions how it is best to wait until your babes are 12-18 months of age to have gluten, since little ones younger than a year have trouble digesting the enzymes and it can be hard on their little tummies (yourgreenbaby.com).

There are some great benefits to spelt flour though!

DIGESTION: Spelt is an ancient grain, high in fibre, and is easier to digest than other wheat flours. It is more water-soluble, and has been said to sit well with those that have allergies to wheat, or for those who have gluten intolerance (WHfoods.com). Although, to my surprise, spelt does contain gluten, and is basically a "cousin" of wheat.

NUTRITIONAL VALUE: Perhaps you'd like to know that spelt contains vitamin B2, manganese, copper, fibre, and a stinkload of iron. Spelt rocks our socks because the nutrients from the germ and bran are left in tact (www.whatscookingamerica.net).

BETTER FLAVOUR: To top it off, it has an amazingly delicious nutty flavour that kicks white and whole wheat flour's arse.

We like to buy the Organic Stone Ground Spelt from Bulk Barn. Deeelish!

3/4 cup spelt flour
1/4 cup arrowroot powder
1/8 tsp salt
3 Tbsp coconut oil
1/4 cup brown rice syrup/maple syrup or agave nectar
1 Tbsp vanilla

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. Mix the dry ingredients in one bowl and the wet in another bowl. Add wet to dry.
3. Lay down a piece of wax paper, or clean counter top floured with spelt. Roll out to whatever thickness you desire. We like about 1/2 inch, but you can go thinner for a crispier cookie. I used a lot of extra flour for rolling etc.
4. Use cookie cutters to make shapes and bake until golden brown, 8-12 minutes. Makes 1 1/2 dozen.

5. Enjoy!

It's one of the most refreshing, delicious fruits of the summer!
Watermelons are a "sweet" way to quench your thirst! Some countries even use the rind as a vegetable, and others roast the seeds

Did you know that allowing a watermelon to fully ripen will give you the best nutrient value? If the watermelon has white flesh, studies show that they have next to no beta-carotene at all (whfoods.com). Wait until the outside is dark green, and the flesh is fully red. Enjoy watermelon at room temp, since our bodies tend to digest them easier that way (www.realfoodforlife.com).

I just whipped up these goodies for my mom for dessert. I'm not gonna lie, they're one of the best things I've eaten in a long time. I know she's gonna love 'em, too (if my husband doesn't eat them all first!)

Pure cocoa is said to reduce stress, and may even help heart health (vegetarian.about.com). It may also regulate sleep and appetite, and may help prevent diabetes. The flavanols and cocoa are natural chemicals found in plants that are also rich in antioxidants (mercola.com).

These cookies are simple, and incredibly deeeeelish!
Especially if it's at the office, or at a small gathering. Maybe you're just too busy to "go", or perhaps you're just not into using public bathrooms.

We've all had times we needed to go, but we didn't want to. Not if everyone's gonna smell it. After all, how well does that toilet flush anyway?

Today, let's talk poop. It's a normal part of life. It's natural. Everyone does it. If we didn't, we'd be dead.

Getting rid of junk in our bodies is how God designed it.

Plus, did you know you "reak" havoc on your body by prairie doggin' it?

The Health Risks of Holding it In

constipation - The longer you hold it, the more you're fecal matter dries out and can become painful to pass, which can then lead to hemmorhoids

Urinary Tract Infections - Many studies show the function of the bowel is linked to the urinary tract (nursingcenter.com)

incontinence - The longer you are constipated, the reflex of the colon may be damaged (www.wfneurology.org)

colon and rectal cancer - There is a higher risk of cancers due to holding in a buildup of toxins that should be exiting the body (www.webmd.com)

bowel impaction - A mass or "plug" that develops in your colon from severe constipation (www.constipation-remedies-for-all.com)

bowel obstruction or perforation - When your small or large intestine is totally blocked, nothing can move through (www.healthlinkbc.ca)

So, no matter how awkward it might seem: Remember your boss, colleagues, and even the Duchess of Cambridge poops, too. And if you're severely constipated, talk to your doc. It can be dangerous to your health if you leave it for too long.

There are many great natural ways to treat constipation: Drink plenty of water, get enough dietary fibre, pitch antibiotics if you can, find activities that reduce stress, cut back on refined foods, eat beans, prunes, drink organic coffee, coconut oil (mix half 1/2 tsp with juice or water 3-4 times a day), and finally...get movin'!

If you must, flush a toilet you haven't used before to know its flushing ability, and learn how to squat in public bathrooms without touching the bowl. Overall, friends....just go when you feel the urge.

Compared to the imitation maple syrup, PURE maple syrup is the way to go. Imitation syrup contains mostly corn syrup (danger), high fructose corn syrup (even more danger), artificial flavours, and let's be honest..chemicals. It's junk. Toss it!

Instead, enjoy some rawesome pure maple syrup on your steel cut oats, in your Kicking Horse coffee, or in a salad dressing!

Are you someone who NEEDS to have caffeinated coffee to function?

There is plenty of evidence out there discouraging the over-consumption of coffee.

An average cup contains anywhere from 95-200 mg of caffeine. If over 600 mg is consumed on a daily basis, studies show it may be damaging to our health. It can mess with cholesterol, and even heighten chances for heart disease (mayoclinic.com). Many of the processed coffee's you'll find at the store are packed with synthetically processed caffeine that absorbs through the digestive system much faster than naturally occurring plant caffeine (organicauthority.com). Overall, you're missing out on the value of actually receiving antioxidants from the original, natural botanical, and you'll have a quicker crash with the synthetic kind (mayoclinic.com, mercola.com).

What are you sippin' on?

Even though studies show the health risks of too much coffee, did you know that a hot cuppa organic, naturally caffeinated java each day may actually be beneficial to your health? Here's why!

1. Gives us a plant-based energy boost

2. It's may be a natural pain reliever (dailymail.uk)

3. It is a great source of antioxidants (phys.org)

4. Natural caffeine in coffee may be beneficial in protecting against Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Type 2 Diabetes, and liver cancer (Mayoclinic.com, Mercola.com)

So there you have it.

A cup a day isn't going to kill ya. But let's be honest, if you're drinking your coffee, get some other things into you with some nutritional value. If we eat a balanced diet, get movin', and get the sleep we need, we shouldn't have to rely on 7 coffee's a day to function. Doesn't that scream addiction? But I know most of us enjoy coffee. I certainly do. My advice is, if you're going to drink it, pick the right kind. Buy organic. Buy a coffee that is naturally caffeinated. Buy coffee that gives you a boost, and stay under 600 mg per day.

So hey, here's the kind to buy!

Check out Kicking Horse Coffee. We like our coffee bold, and sometimes decaffeinated, so this was a great kind to try. Kicking Horse is organic, and contains natural caffeine. And trust me, it's amazingly tasty.

This rockin' Canadian company also sells tea, and chocolate bars! You also don't have to be Canadian to buy since they ship to the US, and Internationally. Check out the online store, and the closest place to buy Kicking Horse near you, HERE.

There are many types of loose leaf teas I enjoy, but this week, I'm loving TEAVANA's Slimful Chocolate Decadence.

I don't know about you, but a chocolate tea is something I could enjoy every day! Since I am a huge lover of coconut and chocolate..this combo seemed too much to handle! It's got yummy cacao, coconut, and a wee bit of ginger in it. It's such a treat!

This oolong tea is great because it can give you a bit of a boost (it is caffeinated, but a lot less than coffee). When sipped regularly, oolong tea is often used for treating skin problems, may be a good aid in digestion, and may even boost the immune system (webmd.com, altmedicine.com). Ultimately..it's so... insanely...delicious!

I know loose leaf tea is a little pricier than buying teabags, but it's a great gift, or a nice treat every once in a while! There's nothing like loose leaf freshness. Check out TEAVANA, and all their amazing flaves of tea, HERE.

Since many of us are celebrating the amazing life of Jesus, I thought I would share a great video a friend posted this morning from Doctor Oz.

He featured Doctor Don E. Colbert. He wrote a book called, "What Would Jesus Eat? It is an interesting, and important question indeed! Check it out, here.

Did Jesus eat tonnes of meat? Or was it more of a plant-based diet? Since we didn't have microwaves, or fast food...it all looked a little different back then.

"What do we know about Jesus' health?" Watch the 2 video parts, HERE!

Dr. Oz also featured a book I read a few years back about a man who documented his journey of taking the Bible literally. For one. Whole. Year. Yes, some may say it is quite extreme, but it makes for a very entertaining read! From loving his neighbour, to growing a ginormous beard, to avoiding wearing clothes with mixed fibres...it's a book that stands out from many. Check out, The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. RAW, Cinnamon Blueberry Torte. Did I mention they're vegan?

The health benefits of blueberries: They have one of the highest antioxidant counts compared to other fresh fruits, and they are high in Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and even zinc (womensfitness.net). The health risks of........negativity.

The average adult has 300 negative thoughts per day, about 1 ever 2 1/2 minutes (www.suite101.com).

Being content is tough sometimes. We've all been there. No doubt.

We all have anxiety about money, relationships, work, kids, family, and health. Life isn't easy sometimes.

Negativity is "characterized by the absence of distinguishing or marked qualities or features; lacking positive attributes (opposed to positive ): a dull, lifeless, negative character (www.dictionary.com). In other words, we fail to see the beauty in life.

So, what are the health risks of being a 'Debbie Downer'?

Negativity may impact your immune system. The National Academy of Sciences linked negative brain activity to a "weakened immune system" (news.bbc.com).

Negativity may affect your memory. Researching are discovering that negativity can affect the shape of our brain, and whether or not we suffer from memory problems later in life (suite101.com).

Negativity may cause weight gain. "Comfort food" has this name for a reason. Many of us struggle to keep our diet in check, especially when we're not feeling 100%.

Negativity may also be linked to cancer, ulcers, panic attacks, headaches, asthma, skin problems, heart disease, and the list could go on and on.

What can we do to stay positive and healthy?

Try to get all the proper nutrients needed in your diet, especially from fruits and veggies. Peace out processed foods! Get into eating more raw and nutritious foods. Drink smoothies. Cut down on meat. Eat more spinach. Its going to keep you feeling more positive, full of energy, and will keep your immunity strong.

Exercise. "Endorphins are a neurotransmitter that have a direct impact on our mood. Produced by the pituitary gland during exercise, endorphins are essentially an opiate that creates a feeling of overall well-being" (informationgateway.org). Heck, walking is nice. It's Spring! Do it.

Sleep. Sleep and mood are closely connected; poor or inadequate sleep can cause irritability and stress, while healthy sleep can enhance well-being (healthysleep.med.harvard.eu).

Stay in touch and give to your community. Keep up with friendships that are fruitful. Stay connected. One of the greatest sources of comfort is knowing we aren't alone in our joys and struggles.

Pray. Pubmed research: "One hundred and seventy-five breast cancer survivors participated in a longitudinal study of survivorship.
Count your blessings. Write down the things you are thankful for. You'll realize, what you've been given is an amazing gift.

Surround yourself with hopeful and positive things: Be aware of your mood when you watch certain tv shows or movies. Even articles or books can make you feel low. Make a point of surrounding yourself with positive people, books, movies and music.

I've always enjoyed potato and leek soup, but never tried eating leeks any other way, until this year.

My hubby brought home some leeks to make the incredible Gerson Hippocrates Soup, and I wasn't sure what to do with the leftovers. I whipped up a stir fry with the veggies I had in the fridge, and sliced up some leeks as well. I'm telling you, this gave our stir fry an amazing flavour!

Leeks are a great addition to your diet because they are:

High in fibre, calcium, and rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin B6. They also contain potassium, folic aid, and iron (health.com).

Other interesting uses for leeks: They have been said to reduce symptoms of arthritis, and are also an antiseptic agent. If you apply leeks to a wound they are supposed to prevent infection (health.com).

Provident Organic Farms gives us instruction on the care and prep for leeks:

When cutting off the root, be careful not to cut too far into the white part or leek will fall apart during cooking.

Remove dark green “leaves” at the point where the white part starts to turn pale green, much higher and you will be chewing a mouthful of fiber instead of soft, creamy leek.

There's just something about cinnamon, sugar, and warm baked apples smothered in a buttery batter. You drooling yet?

Since I'm up for trying new things, and finding healthy alternatives, I tried making a healthy breakfast that sort of resembles an apple crisp. I used steel cut oats in place of rolled oats, and maple syrup in place of brown sugar. Then I added in some other delicious nutritious ingredients you and your fam will love! Let's talk first about the health benefits of steel cut oats. Here goes!

Steel cut oats are loaded with great nutrients. I'm talkin' fibre, B Vitamins, iron, and protein. And to top it off, they're low in fat!

So what's the diff between rolled oats and steel cut oats?

Diabetes Health describes the process like this: "Steel-cut oats are whole grains, made when the groats (the inner portion of the oat kernel) are cut into pieces by steel. Also known as coarse-cut oats or Irish oats, they are golden and look a little like small pieces of rice. They gain part of their distinctive flavor from the roasting process after being harvested and cleaned. Although the oats are then hulled, this process does not strip away their bran and germ, allowing them to retain a concentrated source of their fiber and nutrients (www.diabeteshealth.com). Load me up!

In addition, using maple syrup is a great substitute for sugar. In an article recently written in the Toronto Sun, research has shown that, in moderation, maple syrup may have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-cancer properties and contains great minerals like calcium, zinc, potassium, and magnesium (www.thestar.com). Many other sources speak of real maple syrup being a great boost for the immune system, and can soothe a sore stomach (www.health.com).

Wanna give this healthy cinnamon apple dish a try? You get the similar flavours to a delicious crisp, yet you're getting some great fuel to start your day. I've literally been eating this for breakfast for a week straight. Let's just say, I'm pretty much in love with it.

Enjoy!

The apple is still crunchy when you prepare it this way. I prefer to keep it raw, but if you would rather your apples be more cooked through, add them to the pot in the steel cut oats in the final moments of cooking.

Or perhaps you can't even stand your own morning breath! Did you know our tongue may tell us a lot about our health?

Doctor Victor Zeines, a Holistic dentist, and Master in Nutrition, has a mercury-free dentistry. For 25 years, his studies on hundreds of patients tongues show very interesting results. Vitalboost.com shows some of his discoveries. Check out the different colours of the tongue, and what this could indicate:

Yellow or yellowish-green: Possible problems with stomach or spleen, indicating trouble with liver or gallbladder.

Gray or brownish gray: Some people may struggle with poor immunity, and have trouble recovering from colds. He found this is a sign of stomach or intestinal imbalances.

White: This may be a sign of the body getting rid of toxins. Some in Zeines' studies showed results of the white film on their tongue being parasites, anemia, malnourishment, kidney problems, imbalanced hormones, or poor circulation (www.vitalboost.com).

Ok, so, now that you're back from checking the colour of your tongue, let's talk about what all of this actually means!

The brilliant Nutritionist, Kimberly Snyder also discusses how our tongue can show us how much toxicity our bodies may have. She says, "Our entire digestive tract is lined with a natural mucous membrane. This membrane is very sensitive, and naturally transparent. When we eat a diet consisting of preservative chemicals, GMO foods, pesticides, very acidic foods, etc., we irritate this delicate lining...... The mucous membrane is always trying to diffuse impacted mucus and toxic residue up from the colon, intestines, and stomach to the less impacted areas of the digestive tract, such as the throat, mouth (tongue), and sinuses....The coating on the tongue is therefore a good indicator of how much constipated mucus has accumulated in the digestive organs. When our breath is really bad, especially in the mornings, this can also be a good indicator of how compromised or backed up our systems are" (www.kimberlysnyder.net).

Anyone else feel gross after reading that?!

So, how do we cleanse our bodies from toxins?

There are plenty of detox programs out there, some that seem risky and I question how healthy they actually are. It's time The Health Nutty Professor got in on this! Since I'm still nursing, and have a super hard working husband, I'm in search of a great family-friendly detox program.

Weston A Price discusses how to detox without all the pills and crazy diets. Seems fairly doable, right?

The Weston A. Price diet recommendations:
Hello RAWesome Friday, and What up weekend?!

Let's discuss the beautiful and incredible, Sunflower.

Why should you nibble on some seeds, or grab a bottle of sunflower oil?

SKIN

Great skin is every girls dream. That's why you should get on the sunflower train. The Linoleic acid in sunflower oil makes it a great moisturizer. High in vitamins E, A, and C, it is also a great antioxidant which helps to prevent damage to skin (pureattitudecosmetics.com).

HAIR

Sunflower oil is an awesome, inexpensive, natural moisturizer for hair. Livestrong.com mentions that the omega 6 fatty acids in sunflower oil are said to help prevent thinning hair. Spencer David Kobren writes about it in his book called, "The Truth About Women's Hair Loss: What Really Works for Treating and Preventing Thinning Hair" (www.livestrong.com).

DIGESTION

Sunflower oil and raw seeds can aid in digesting food, and even help with constipation, thanks to the high amount of dietary fibre. (www.webmd.com). Yay for staying regular, folks!

BRAIN & HEART

Did you know that eating raw sunflower seeds, or using sunflower oil are great for heart health, and brain health? Studies have shown that the nutritional power of sunflower can protect against heart disease and diabetes, lowering cholesterol levels (www.sunflowernsa.com).
The National Sunflower Association states: "From phytochemicals and important vitamins and minerals to convenience of size and cost effectiveness, the amazing sunflower kernel is a powerhouse compared to no other! And one need look no further than NuSun oil for a healthy, trans-free alternative to hydrogenated oils and shortenings" (www.sunflowernsa.com).

Other great uses for sunflower oil are: cuticle oil, eye cream, massage oil, and aromatherapy.
